Carrara quarries

The Carrara quarries form a geographical area of undoubted charm, creating white expanses that stretch as far as the eye can see. In these areas the excavation and processing of one of the finest marbles in the world takes place. We will be happy to guide you in the marble basin of Carrara, where Michelangelo himself personally chose the best marbles to make his sculptures during the Renaissance.

CARRARA: ONE OF THE ITALY'S MOST ICONIC LOCATIONS

The quarries have been the site of marble excavation and processing for many centuries, and can be of two types: closed and open. The way in which marble is taken, from the depth of the perspective white walls, the wide spaces, and the symmetrical precision of the tiers, causes the worktops to look like steps of amphitheaters.

The extraction of marble in the quarry has been a continuous evolution of living and dramatic documents through the centuries, from the primitive wooden wedges, to the system of the cut of the Romans, to the revolutionary helical thread, to the current diamond wire.

Among the ravines of the quarries and the steep, white steps are preserved the heroism, the labors and the sacrifices of the quarry-men, who tenaciously continue to level these mountains today; cutting them, breaking them them apart, piece by piece, into small blocks and sending them around the world to your homes.
